Musical Theatre Guild Presents

Kismet

In light of the devastating spread and impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and in compliance with the State of California’s and the City of Glendale’s Safer at Home lockdowns:

All performances through April 30th are cancelled.

We are in communication with the presenters of these shows regarding rescheduling, and patrons who have purchased tickets for the events affected by the cancellations will be contacted at the earliest possible regarding new performance dates, refunds, and related details. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we work as quickly as we can through this unprecedented situation.

If you have tickets for a performance past the April 30th timeline, please check the calendar page for that specific event for news and updates as they become available.

The Glendale Arts and Alex Theatre staff wish you health and safety throughout this time and look forward to seeing you back at the Alex when it is appropriate for us to reopen our doors.

Musical Theatre Guild presents a Staged Concert Version of
KISMET

Music & Lyrics: Robert Wright & George Forrest from the themes of Alexander Borodin
Book: Charles Lederer & Luther Davis
Based on the play by Edward Knoblock

Set in the exotic time of the fabled Arabian Nights, KISMET spins the fateful adventure-filled tale of glib-tongued street poet Hajj, a resourceful seller of rhymes, and his beautiful daughter Marsinah. It weaves a lush tapestry of romance and melody and features many favorites including ‘Stranger in Paradise,’ ‘And This Is My Beloved’ and ‘Baubles, Bangles and Beads.’

The Los Angeles Civic Light Opera commissioned composers Wright and Forrest to adapt the luscious classical melodies of Alexander Borodin. KISMET premiered in Los Angeles before opening on Broadway in 1953 during the middle of a newspaper strike. Having no reviews to help sell tickets, KISMET was perhaps the first musical to use the power of television to promote a show. It ran for 583 performances, starring Alfred Drake, Joan Diener and Richard Kiley. The recipient of three Tony® Awards, including Best Musical, KISMET was adapted into an MGM film in 1955.

Status Update from the Alex Theatre

As the saying goes, "The Show Must Go On." However, sometimes, unprecedented circumstances call for the show to be paused. This is one of those rare times.

Currently, our shows through April 5th will not be taking place on their original dates.

The Glendale Arts and Alex Theatre staff have been hard at work behind-the-scenes collaborating with the presenters of these performances to reschedule dates and communicating with ticket buyers about their options.

We are continuing to monitor directives established by local, state-wide, and national authorities and will post developments on shows scheduled beyond April 5th as they happen.

While our staff is working remotely, we are with our beloved Alex in spirit, and our hearts remain committed to the thousands of patrons we happily serve every week and our extended family of presenters, producers, performers, and community members who call the Alex home.

These are trying time for everyone. The economic impact on the dual industries with which we identify - non-profits and performing arts/live entertainment - has been swift and severe.

If you are able, we ask you make a gift at GlendaleArts.org that will allow us to continue our work at the Alex Theatre - a place for arts and entertainment to be enjoyed; a symbol of history, beauty, and community - during this time, so we are ready to bring healing and happiness to all who need it when the time is right.

We wish all of you and your loved ones health and safety throughout this situation and can't wait to welcome you through our doors again when the show is ready to go back on.

With our love,

Glendale Arts/Alex Theatre Management Staff
